First Friday Films - Addicted To Plastic
2/4/2011

"ADDICTED TO PLASTIC" will be featured at the February First Friday Films event as CRM, DEQ and MINA kick off our No Need Bag campaign to reduce plastic bag use in the CNMI. Bring the whole family to learn about the dangers of plastic pollution on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at American Memorial Park.
From styrofoam cups to artificial organs, plastics are perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile material ever invented. No invention in the past 100 years has had more influence and presence than synthetics. But such progress has had a cost.
For better and for worse, no ecosystem or segment of human activity has escaped the shrink-wrapped grasp of plastic. Addicted To Plastic is a global journey to investigate what we really know about the material of a thousand uses and why there's so darn much of it. On the way we discover a toxic legacy, and the men and women dedicated to cleaning it up.
First Friday Films is a monthly film series brought to you through a partnership with the National Park Service and the Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ), with generous support from community groups such as the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance (MINA).
For planning purposes, the movie runs about 85 minutes long. As always, “First Friday Films” is free and open to the public. Check firstfridayfilmssaipan.blogspot.com for more information.
Double Feature:
12/3/2010

Coming up on Friday December 3rd at 6:30pm, First Friday Films will be screening two short films that highlight two threatened and endangered species here in the CNMI; the Fanihi (Marianas flying fox) and the Hawksbill sea turtle.
Fanihi: A Cultural Digest, a short film shot in the CNMI by Jonathan Fowler, discusses the complex issue that is the conservation of this import animal. The film examines the ecological role the Fanihi plays on our islands as well as the cultural importance it has with the Chamorro people.
Home for Hawksbill, a short film by Jordan Plotsky, tells the story of a remote atoll in the Solomon Islands that, before industrial fishing pressures, was home to a large hawksbill turtle population. After hunting the Hawksbill turtle to the brink of extinction, three rival tribes of the Arnavon Islands come together to fight for the turtle's survival, overcoming cultural conflicts and disputes over land ownership to protect their islands. The film follows one of the traditional leaders of the island in his transformation from turtle poacher to turtle conservationist, and gives insight communities struggling with similar issues. You can visit the movies website here.
For planning purposes, the two films combined have an approximate run time of about 50 minutes.
We hope to see you in December!

First Friday Films to show Blue Gold: World Water Wars
Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and American Memorial Park are co-sponsoring free monthly environmental film screenings with before and after presentations and group discussion. The next screening will be held on November 5th at the American Memorial Park Visitor's Center at 6:30 pm. The November event will feature the widely acclaimed film, Blue Gold: World Water Wars. The film explores our basic human right to fresh water access, but concedes this right is infringed upon in every corner of the globe. We are polluting, diverting, pumping, and wasting our limited supply of fresh water at an expediential level as population and technology grows. The rampant overdevelopment of agriculture, housing and industry is increasing the demands for fresh water well beyond the finite supply, resulting in the desertification of the earth. Corporate giants are forcing developing countries to privatize their water supply for profit. Corrupt governments are using water for economic and political gain. Military control of water is emerging and a new geo-political map and power structure is forming, setting the stage for world water wars.
You can see the trailer and find more information about the film here. For more information about the November showing, please contact Aric Bickel, DEQ at 664-8513, email aricbickel@deq.gov or visit the First Friday Films blogsite at http://firstfridayfilmssaipan.blogspot.com.

Four-time "Best Documentary" award winner, Blue Gold sheds light on the waste and overuse of one of our most precious resources: fresh water. The film discusses the practices that have lead to the dwindling supply of this limited resource and follows various examples from around the globe of people struggling to maintain their access and rights to water.
"differs from many others of the same vein in offering opinions and ideas from a varied number of professionals and experts that could lead to tangible solutions."

NOAA’s 2007 Marianas Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program Mapping Updates.
6/11/2007

As the GIS Specialist for NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center’s (PIFSC) Coral Reef Ecosystem Division’s (CRED) Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center (PIBHMC), I will be joining you all to discuss the mapping that is occurring during NOAA’s 2007 Marianas Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program cruise. We are aboard the NOAA ship Hi’ialakai and working with a survey launch, R/V Acoustic Habitat Investigator (AHI).
I will explain our methods for collecting and processing multibeam data. Then, I will review the areas at each location that we surveyed this year (with reference to previous years’ data). Some of the key features and priority sites will be highlighted. You will see an overview of the bathymetry (depth) maps and the expected backscatter (intensity of acoustic return) maps. A large goal in these meetings is to let you all know what type and quality of data, in particular areas of interest, you can expect to come from the mapping portion of this cruise. Importantly, I’d like to get comments from you to make sure we serve the data in a user friendly way when they are processed and ready for publication.
This will also be a good time for you to raise general management or data sharing concerns (having to do with just the multibeam data) that I could pass on to my supervisors, chief of CRED and/or the director of PIFSC.
